The hardest part of starting a new blog--especially when it is a family blog--is deciding upon a name that everyone likes. Skylar hated all my suggestions: Kyoto Wanderers, Sushi Fiends, Creef-Schmidts, Schmeefs, Sumo Travelers. He countered with these sensible, no-nonsense names, Skylar's Travel Blog and Skylar's Skylar Blog. We actually had set up our first blog as "SkylarsSkylarBlog," only I lost all our password information and after hours of damage-control, gave up and started this one from scratch.
Because Skylar and Mark are out for the day, I've opted for "Musubi Man"--a character from one of our favorite children's books--a Hawaiian comandeering of the classic "Gingerbread Man." In our house, we call "musubis" "onigiris" and they are Skylar's favorite comfort food. No ones makes them like Grandma Chiyohi. One of the things we are most looking forward to in Japan is the abundant presence of cheap and tasty musubis at virtually every snack shop and food vendor in the country.
Other things we are most looking forward to in addition to musubis this summer: The Gion Festival in Kyoto (mid-July), hiking Mt. Hiei on a regular basis, green tea ice cream cones, and searching for the last wooden bucket maker in "Old Kyoto."
Stay tuned for more postings.
