Three favorite things about Japan

1. We love Ozeki Kootooshu. He is the hairy 25 year old, 270lb Bulgarian sumo wrestler who just won the Emperor's Cup. He is the first westerner to achieve this honor. We adore him.

2. We love all the vending machines that sell drinks with funny names like "Pocari Sweat" and "Cal Pis." [Skylar says, "it's a good thing 'Pocari' doesn't have an apostrophe 's' at the end"]

3. From the land that gave us, "Everyone Poops," we now have the totally adorable "unchi." Unchis are cute little poops that adorn everything from stickers, key chains, to silly hats.

OMG, I love the picture of the water? bottle.

I would love to see more funny Japanese food/drinks/signs similar to that.

That's hilarious.

love the blog--both the commentary and the pictures. but [nitpicky comment alert] you know, kotooshu isn't the first westerner to win a sumo tournament: konishiki and akebono (both americans from hawaii) did too. even though they are of asian/pacific islander descent, aren't they westerners?

ooooh, since you are afficionados of kitsch, as you make your way across the archipelago, you may want to pick up regional hello kitty tchotchkes: at every tourist major site, you will inevitably find hello kitty dressed in local garb, or eating the local delicacy (or dressed as the local delicacy), or posing coyly in front of the local castle. she is commerce personified, i tell you, though she doesn't even crack a smile. you can probably find her at university campus shops, wearing the school colors as well. the chickie has no shame.

have fun. can't wait to read more entries.
